How to use Pain Association’s Self-Management Competencies Chart (spider)

The chart gives a quick to fill in and easy to understand overview of Self-Management skills and understanding.  The chart looks at 12 key areas of Self-Management.

Simply score each of the areas out of 10 where represents the worst, this is in the centre of the ‘spider web’ and 10 represents the best which is at the outside of the ‘web’.

So simply count out from the middle and make a mark at the appropriate point.

The point to mark is the intersection of the diagonal line to the description, with the circular line representing the number.

Once a score has been marked for each area, join the points up. This will produce a diagram that gives a ‘map’ of an individual’s self management skills.  The chart can also be used repeatedly to map progress.  The example below shows pre and post intervention scores.
