My Journey by Andrew Watson

Andrew Watson who attends our Dumfries group meetings shares his self management journey.

My name is Andrew Watson, I am 54, married to Simone with two girls Chloe and Maisie aged 10 and 8 and two dogs.

In September 2008, two weeks before my wedding, I had a serious accident in which I broke my pelvis in four places and damaged my hip.

I spent 41 days at Sunderland Royal infirmary having my pelvis put back together and a lot of physiotherapy. The Doctors said that there was a 50/50% chance that I would be able to walk properly again.

We moved the wedding to February 2009 and my goal was to walk down the aisle with a walking stick. I did do it, so happily I was in the right 50%!

For 5 years, I had to go back to the hospital at Sunderland Royal infirmary annually for an X-ray on my pelvis and hip. On the fifth visit, it was discovered that I had nerve damage in my lower back and problems down my right leg.
